Upson-Lee volleyball hosted Spalding County for a best of five non-region match and the Lady Knights fell 3-1.
The Lady Knights were missing two key players, Leanna Fowler and Lindsey Eldridge, and had to fill in the gaps with younger players. Reese Phillips and Gracie Parker stepped in to plug the holes and Spalding took advantage of Upson-Lee’s lack of depth.
Upson-Lee fell in the first two sets 25-12 and 25-16 and went on to force a fourth set with a 25-18. However, Spalding took a 25-18 victory in the fourth set to seal the game.
Phillips is a freshman who has seen a lot of playing time at the junior varsity level. She was tested with her first varsity appearance.
“She did good,” said Coach Randy Holliday. “I challenged her a bit when the Spalding girl started picking on her with her serve and she responded well.”
Upson-Lee will play four more non-region matches against Houston County, Callaway, Kendrick, and Spencer next week before beginning region play on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Jackson High School. The Lady Knights are 5-17 overall this season.
