In a story entitled, “BOE Votes in Opposition to Charter School Application,” in the Upson Beacon on May 3, the Thomaston-Upson Board of Education voted to send a letter of opposition to the State Charter School Commission of Georgia to voice unanimous opposition to the charter school.
The Utopian Academy for the Arts: Macon-Bibb was a charter school proposal that would have built a school at 100 Mcintosh Parkway in Thomaston for middle school boys in grades 6-8. The charter drew the ire of the board of education, which questioned why the school would take children from two counties that do not border, and is named for a county in which it would not exist.
In a turn of events, the Utopian Academy for the Arts: Macon-Bibb withdrew its petition from the State Charter School Commission on Friday, May 12, effectively ending the chance for the school to come before the commission for fiscal year 2023. As such, the SCSC will not consider, or act upon, the petition this year.
