A four-year-old boy with “severe injuries” was life-flighted to Egleston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta following a vehicle crash last week on Highway 74 East near Gilmore Center, according to a statement from Thomaston Police Chief Mike Richardson.

A family was traveling toward downtown Thomaston when a tire blew, causing the vehicle to cross a lane and collide with a concrete barrier near Upson-Lee Middle School football field, the report stated.

The child was unresponsive when emergency medical technicians arrived, but EMTs were able to generate a pulse, Richardson said. Four other passengers – the mother, father, and two other children – were injured in the crash and transported to Upson Regional Medical Center by emergency medical services.

Two helicopters were dispatched to the scene, but only one was used for transport.

Thomaston Police Department turned over the accident investigation to Georgia State Patrol Post 26 personnel.
