Saturday’s Youth Fishing Derby marked the first event held at Thomaston’s Lakeside Park, just one day after a grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony, and dozens of children attended to compete for the largest catch.

Eleven-year-old Macie Morris was awarded for “Biggest Fish” after catching a six-pound catfish. Nine-year-old Carolina Barber caught seven fish, the largest amount reeled in by one person.

The event was sponsored by Fall Line Bait & Tackle, which provided prizes for all contenders. Volunteers included those from the Thomaston Fire Department, Police Department, and Rotary Club.

While Lakeside Park is not normally open for fishing, city officials say that they look forward to hosting more community events at Lakeside.

Lakeside Park, located at 800 County Road, is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
