After approving multiple certificates of appropriateness for downtown businesses, the Thomaston Historic Preservation Commission elected Luke Haney chairman and Jane Burdette vice chair during its Jan. 3 meeting.
Dakota Terrell of ReLeaf Hemp Company, located at 109 South Center Street in Thomaston, presented an updated window signage rendering, following the commission’s previous request to bring the store’s façade into city zoning ordinance compliance. The HPC unanimously approved the COA.
The second COA on the table was for the addition of exterior signage and placement of an awning for Little Ones, a new children’s clothing boutique in the works at 107 South Center Street in Thomaston, owned by Jared and Elizabeth Huckaby. The COA was unanimously approved.
The third and fourth COAs, also unanimously approved, were for signage to be added at the entrances of Tidal Wave Auto Spa headquarters, located at 115 East Main Street in Thomaston, and SHJ Construction, located at 124 East Thompson Street in Thomaston.
The final COA approved during the meeting was for window signage on the façade of Pretty Piper, a new business at 102 North Church Street in Thomaston, which held its grand opening Saturday, Jan. 14.
Three interested applicants attended the meeting and shared reasons why they wish to serve on the HPC, as well as background information about themselves. With two vacant seats on the commission, members shared comments on applicants, which were shared with Thomaston City Council before its meeting later the same day.
Applicants Barbara Worthy and Jackson Reddick were both appointed by the council to serve.
In other news, Economic Development Coordinator Taylor Smith told the commission that the pending historic resource survey update should begin in the first half of 2023, as the Georgia Department of Community Affairs Historic Preservation Commission GNAHRGIS System update has been completed.
Smith also told the commission that the Ritz Theatre has a new owner, Ricardo Dias, and member Allison Uphold requested that a discussion of signage for the Silvertown Historic District be added to the February meeting agenda, as the signs are in “desperate need of repair and replacement.”
Burdette thanked the commission for allowing her to serve as chair for the past two years and congratulated Haney on his appointment.
